Synopsis

The rivalry between three piano geniuses in Towa Hall starts with the prodigy Kousei Arima. While his emotive first performance enamors the free-spirited Emi Igawa, Kousei eventually evolves his technique to become exact and precise, finding himself a new follower in the eccentric Takeshi Aiza. Unbeknownst to outsiders, the two other players begin to target Kousei with their respective performances. Emi attempts to convert Kousei back to his old self with her vibrant playing, while Aiza turns his admiration for Kousei into motivation to beat him at his own game.

"Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso", or "Your Lie in April", was a series that was in my opinion, oddly divided among the anime community. (Honestly, I don't get why people hate this show so much.) On one hand, many people praised the show for its themes and storytelling, while others thought of it as a piece of entertainment that was WAY too overhyped for what it actually was, essentially dumbing down the opinion of anyone who gave it positive feedback. So, even with all of that, what did this OVA of one of the more recently debated anime give us?

Mixed Feelings

Compared to the original anime, this one only acts as a complement to fill the missing plot in the anime itself. But, it is not that essential for you to watch this as it has no relatively important plot either. It is just a prequel and does not really relate with the original story. I'd recommend you to watch this episode before going straight with the anime, otherwise don't watch it.

- It should have been released before the main anime
- If you're looking more about what happens after the ending of the anime, don't watch this

Even if you like the show, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso's OVA is an in-coherent mess, with events and backstories that should have been elaborated on in the show.

Animation - 5/10

In the show, the animation (besides the atrocious CGI hands) was beautiful in places. However in the OVA, most of the scenes are reused, and when a scene ISN'T reused, it's probably a still frame. There were still an overabundance of chibis, and some very awkwardly animated scenes. Some examples are when Takeshi Aiza was riding on his bike, and there was a very oddly place perception shot.
